La Paloma School

The Fallbrook Garden Club has two projects under development, and one on-going garden at La Paloma School in Fallbrook.

Raised Beds

In June 2008 Home Depot awarded us a $1,200 gift card for materials to build raised beds in the garden. The raised beds will be used for planting California native plants by 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classes this next fall.
Materials Delivery

On July 9, Home Depot employees Tony and Jose brought the raised bed materials consisting of redwood boxes, screens, and soil to the school grounds. Volunteers get ready for the job ahead.
Offloading Materials

Here they are offloading the truck with the help of some garden club members.

Materials were counted and stacked as our publicity chair recorded the events.

Planting box screens were installed. installing screens

The completed boxes wait in their temporary location.

On September 2 starting at 7 AM the garden club volunteers prepared the beds in their final location

and filled them with mulch from Home Depot. Our garden club volunteers work weekly on this and the international grove project, below.

International Grove

A generous grant from the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects is making the dream of an International Grove come true for the children at La Paloma School.
May 1, 2008 began with the arrival of our trees:

· Cercis canadensis or eastern redbud,
· Arbutus unedo or strawberry tree,
· Chionanthus retusus or Chinese fringe tree,
· Raphiolepsis "Majestic Beauty", and
· Pistacia chinensis or Chinese pistache.

Not shown is Brachychiton rupestris or bottle tree.

2Plant Fallbrook Elementary School District maintenance staff prepared the site and dug the planting holes. Along with volunteers from Save our Forest/Fallbrook Land Conservancy, who also provided materials and expertise, garden club members slid each tree into its hole,
removed the box surrounding the roots, 3Backfill
4Irrigate backfilled the soil, and created irrigation basins
for all six trees. Next to be installed are paths and shrubs. The grove is open to the public after school and on weekends. 5Finished

Re-staking one of the trees in the international grove. Coming soon:  engraved plaques for each tree.
La Paloma Sprinkler Parts

In October the irrigation system was assembled,
La Paloma Controller and tested.

Looking good! Irrigation is in around the new shrubs and the path is carved out.

The grove’s objective is to benefit the teachers and 4th - 6th grade students at La Paloma. The trees were selected to relate to 4th (CA history), 5th (US history), and 6th (ancient civilizations) grade studies.
